Skillfully Crafted

J.A. Matteson

In wisdom and power the LORD brought you into being. As God is infinite, so are the unlimited expressions of His image through humanity. Each individual is thoughtfully and skillfully crafted to His satisfaction and for His glory. It is an affront to the LORD and sinful to call into question His wisdom and power in what He has created. “Woe to the one who quarrels with his Maker. An earthenware vessel among the vessels of earth! Will the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you doing?’ Or the thing you are making say, ‘He has no hands’?" (Isa. 45:9). You look around and see others have been bestowed with a higher intellectual capacity and so covet what is not yours. Looking into the mirror you inspect the form the LORD was pleased to create and are displeased, desiring that of another. Participating in athletics you grudgingly acknowledge a superior ability of teammates and rivals, dissatisfied with the limits of your abilities. All such thinking is covetous and violates the tenth commandment. Dissatisfaction of this sort illustrates a lack of appreciation for who and what the LORD created you to be. Are you wiser than He? Is your power greater than His? Are your motives purer than His? In and through your being He is well pleased to express His image, a unique representation of His glory. Rejoice, therefore, in the work of His hands, as this is well pleasing to Him. Appreciate the unique attributes the LORD has given you to His glory and you will with satisfaction and wonder will cry out with David, "I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well" (Ps. 139:14).
