Peace as a River

J.A. Matteson

Idolatry knows many faces, and a man lacking understanding endears himself to his endowments while feigning ignorance of Him who gave them. "Thus says the LORD, 'Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast on his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,' declares the LORD" (Jer. 9:23f). The LORD protects His children from the evil one, provides for their sustenance, contends with any who seek them harm, extends benevolent mercy to all who revere His name, exercises justice by metering out a measured recompense toward instigators of wickedness, advances righteousness providentially in the affairs of men, and is intensely jealous for the singular affections of His people. Fidelity of heart before the LORD knows safety, security, sanctification. For who can contend against the LORD of Hosts and prevail? Are not the very endowments in which you trust gifts from His merciful hand? Indeed! You have lifted the skirt and in seduction been led away in darkness to engage in what is unseemly. In arrogance and ignorance you entrust yourself to the might of your position, the treasury of your wealth, the cunning of your instincts. Surely the justice and righteousness of the LORD will visit you as a tornado, and as chaff obliterating the idols of your affection. Seek the LORD while He may be found. Repent of your adulteries and delight in the knowledge of Him who calls you by name. Safety and security are within the gates of His courts, peace as a river flows to all who place their hope and trust in Him.
